How to play
Earth in 24 Hours squeezes Earth's 4.6-billion-year history into a single 24-hour day. Midnight (0:00) is the birth of Earth and 24:00 is now. On this clock you are born as a creature somewhere in time, and try to keep your lineage alive until today.
The Earth clock
Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Squeeze that into 24 hours and one second on the clock is about 53,000 years; one minute is about 3.2 million years.
- Life appears around 4:10 am (about 3.8 billion years ago). For most of the day after that, life on Earth is only microbes.
- The Cambrian explosion, when animals big enough to see become common, comes at about 9:11 pm.
- The age of dinosaurs lasts about an hour, from 10:41 to 11:39 pm.
- We, Homo sapiens, show up at about 11:59:54 pm, in the last 5.6 seconds.
The round clock on the "Be born" screen follows your device's local time. Midnight is the birth of Earth; noon is the seas of about 2.3 billion years ago. The ▼ outside the ring marks "now", and the globe in the middle shows Earth at the time the hand points to. Below the clock you can see how many years have passed on the Earth clock since you opened the page (about 3.2 million years a minute).
Playing Evolution Gacha
- Spin the era rouletteThe hand, which starts out pointing at "now", spins while the globe races through 4.6 billion years, and stops somewhere in Earth's history. Spin as often as you like: each era you land on goes into your era collection (22 slots, from the geological periods and human history). Eras you have not found yet show only their odds. Long eras come up more often; the age of Homo sapiens is about 1 in 16,000 spins, and the time since the Industrial Revolution is about 1 in 19 million. "Draw the era on the Earth clock right now" stops at the era matching your device's time.
- Be born in that eraWhen you like the era, press "Be born in this era". Each era has a set of typical creatures, and one is drawn for you. Around 500 million years ago, for example, you might be a trilobite, an Anomalocaris, a marine worm or one of the earliest fish. You get one creature draw per era; to be something else, spin the roulette again. Before about 3.8 billion years ago there is no life yet, so you are "never born" — that also counts as an ending.
- Read your birth recordIt shows what you are, your era, the chance of being born as this creature (the era's odds times the number of candidates) and how long until today.
- Start evolvingTime starts to flow. At ×1 a game takes about 10 minutes; speed up with ×4, ×16 or "Next fork". Time slows as you approach the present.
- Choose at each forkAt turning points in history, a fork appears. Each option shows how your traits change, such as "Size ▲15". When your body plan changes, you see your creature evolve. Starting as a microbe, you can merge cells, become many-celled, grow a shell and legs, move onto land and take to the air — and reach insects, dinosaurs or humans. From photosynthetic algae you can also take the plant path: mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants. Even as cyanobacteria you can drift into the open ocean or team up with a fungus to become a lichen. When you pick a path that changes where you live, such as going underground, up into the trees or out at night, the scene changes to match.
- Survive selectionWhen a mass extinction strikes, time stops and you see how many species your lineage lost. Your traits affect your chances. If a whole group vanished at that moment in real history, it vanishes in the game too.
- Reach an endingThe game ends when you make it to today (24:00) or go extinct. There are 54 endings to collect in your ending collection, and the 69 forms your lineages took fill your creature collection (ones you have not met yet appear as shadows). You can share your result as an image or a link.
Your lineage's story, measured in your lifetime
Your birthplace is picked from real fossil sites of that era (the Burgess Shale, Solnhofen and about 100 more). During play, the timeline shows what was happening on Earth while your lineage lived, such as the first flowers or the rise of the dinosaurs.
The ending screen tells your lineage's life as a short story: where it was born, how it evolved, which mass extinctions it survived and how it ended. You can read it again in your history and in shared links.
Just below the buttons on the ending screen, "Measured in your lifetime" shows how many 100-year human lifetimes your lineage lasted. Even a 100-year life is only about 0.002 seconds on the Earth clock.
Below that, "Looking back" shows 100 dots: what would have happened if you had been born at the same moment as the same creature 100 times, simulated with the game's own rules. This life of yours is one of those dots. For the fork where your choice mattered most, it also shows each option's chance of lasting to today.
Reading the play screen
Earth clock and the round dial
Shows the time on the Earth clock and how many years ago that is, to the year. The small dial on the left is a 24-hour clock. Markers appear on it at the moment of your birth (white), forks (orange), evolution (purple), selection events (yellow) and extinction (red).
Estimated species and the gauge
A rough count of species in your lineage, scaled to the real number of species the group had at its peak (known or estimated). Besides the everyday ups and downs from your traits, it also rises and falls with real events in Earth's history: ferns spread in the coal forests, conifers decline as flowers take over in the Cretaceous, and mammals boom once the dinosaurs are gone. Each of these is logged with its reason, like "(12,000 → 17,000 species)". The gauge below leans left toward "Thriving" when your lineage is growing and right when it is at risk of extinction.
Traits (Size, Defense, Speed, Smarts, Adaptability)
Your lineage's traits change with your choices and daily-life events, shown with ▲▼. Each fork option also says what it means for you "Ahead".
- Adaptability: helps you survive mass extinctions and grow.
- Size: the bigger you are, the more likely you are to vanish in a mass extinction. Big-bodied lineages almost never survive the asteroid 66 million years ago.
- Defense: fewer losses to predators, especially in predator-rich ages (the Cambrian–Devonian seas and the age of dinosaurs).
- Speed and Smarts: help your lineage grow.
Lineage record
Below the traits, everything that happened is listed in order: forks, evolution, selection events, extinction and daily-life moments — what you ate and how you lived.
Four lineages born at the same moment
Other lineages born in your era evolve and face selection alongside you. Compare their fates at the end.
Play 4.6 billion years
Play 4.6 billion years replays Earth from its birth at 0:00 to now at 24:00 in about five minutes. For the first two minutes time flows at a steady pace, so almost all of the 4.6 billion years go by, including the long stretch when there were only microbes. Then time slows for the last three minutes, from 11:57 pm: human history, farming, civilization, the Industrial Revolution and the recent rise of AI. A spinning globe and that moment's oxygen, day length and sunlight are shown too. Drag the gauge to move back and forth.
FAQ
- Is it free?
- Yes, and there is no sign-up.
- Where are my records saved?
- Only in your browser (local storage). Nothing is sent to a server. Records are not shared between devices or browsers, and clearing your browser data deletes them. You can also delete them with "Delete all records" at the bottom of the "Be born" screen. Up to your 100 most recent records are kept. Your collections stay even when records are deleted or pass 100, and can be deleted with "Delete collections".
- What are the chances of each era?
- The roulette is equally likely to stop at any moment in 4.6 billion years, so long eras come up more often. The age of Homo sapiens (about 300,000 years) is very rare. Your era collection and birth record show the odds.
- How accurate is it?
- Dates and events are based on representative estimates used in the international chronostratigraphic chart and research, but many are debated, and the forks and selection are simplified for the game. See Earth history & sources.
- Do real creatures choose how they evolve?
- No. In real evolution, random differences that help survival in a given environment are passed on (natural selection). The game lets you choose so you can feel how the branches of evolution split.
- Can I play on my phone?
- Yes, on both phones and computers.
